The Veritas Scrub Plane should be the tool of choice for major stock removal, and used at an angle of 30° or more, rather than the traditionally parallel to the grain. The blade edge is ground with a 3" radius, allowing it take an aggressive cut. This is the tool needed to get stock into a condition where you then can use a smooth plane.
The curved cutting edge of the 1-1/2" wide by 3/16" thick blade gives a distinctive, hand-worked texture to the workpiece. This is a single-iron tool, meaning there is no cap iron or chip breaker. Set screws along the side prevent the blade from shifting sideways when it runs into a knot.
The blade that is standard with this plane is a high-carbon steel (Rc58-60). Measures 273mm x 57mm and weighs 1.3Kg. The ductile cast iron body is accurately machined and ground so the sole is flat. A refined yet rugged performer.
